Essiac is an herbal formula popularized by Rene Caisse, a Canadian nurse, and the word, "Essiac," pronounced "ess-ee-ack" is Rene's last name, spelled backward. She worked throughout her life perfecting her formula, which was passed verbally to her by a woman who had been directed by an Ojibwa medicine man to brew a tea of herbs and roots in order to cure her breast cancer. Over the years of her work, Nurse Caisse successfully treated thousands of cancer patients, as well as attempted, futilely, to prove to the medical establishment that her herbal formula was an effective cure for cancer. The basic Essiac formula requires the following herbs: burdock root, slippery elm bark, turkey rhubarb, and sheep sorrell.
