Leptotaenia dissecta (Lomatium dissectum)
was historically one of the most important medicinal plants of the western
United States. Native Americans used this herb as an internal remedy for viral
and bacterial infections, especiially for the eyes (do not use in tincture
form for the eyes), respiratory tract, and urinary tract.
Several tribes ate the roots and shoots of the plant and some immeresed
the fresh root in streams to stun fish for harvesting. The most important use
of the herb was for medicinal purposes, it was the most widely used medicinal
remedies of the Indians of the western United States.
A decoction of the root was taken internally and the above portion of
the plant was smoked or burned and inhaled to treat coughs, colds, hayfever,
bronchitis, asthma, influenza, pneumonia, and tuberculosis. A decoction of the
herb was applied externally for cuts, sores, and rashes; the oily sap was
placed on skin lesions and used in the eyes for trachomal and gonorrheal
infections. The raw root was chewed for sore throat and used as a poultice for
swellings, sprains, and rheumatism. Lomatium dissectum was also used for
equine distemper and as a pediculicide for humans and animals.
During the world wide influenza epidemic of 1917, the effectiveness of
Lomatium dissectum came to the attention of the American white man when it was
observed that native Americans in the Southwest were recovering rapidly from
the virus that was killing others. Ernest Krebs, M.D. found that the Indians
were peeling the dissectum root, drawing and boiling it and skimming off the
oil. Using about a pound of the herb, the Indians were getting well within a
week's time. This herb was used as a food and medicine by the American Indians
of the Northwest.
On the Western frontier, it was one of the best known and widely used
remedies--mostly commonly to treat coughts, colds, hay fever, bronchitis,
asthma, influenza, pneumonia, etc.
Ernest Krebs, Jr., noted biochemist and son of Ernest Krebs, M.D., is
known to have said, "this is become one of the most important antibiotic herbs
known to man."
Ingredients: Leptotaenia dissecta in a 20% alcohol base.
Suggested Use: 5 drops in one tablespoon of water or juice 3
times daily of 2 days. Thereafter, 12 drops to 1/2 dropperful 3 times daily in
one tablespoon water or juice, or as directed by a healthcare professional.
Use as long as symptoms persist.
None of the constituients have been removed from the herb during
extraction process. One of these constitutient is a resin which appears to
cause a rash in some individuals. Edward Alstat, N.D., R.Ph., believes the
rash is a healing reaction, "some type of a cleansing," rather than a side
effect of the herb. If a rash developes discontine use.
