The normal intestinal flora in the human gut includes diverse groups of
Lactobacillius and Bifidobacteria microorganisims. These microorganisms play a
crutial role in human health-- from birth.
When a baby is born, the intestines are virtually sterile, free
of microorganisms. After birth, friendly and harmful bacteria vie for
territory and dominance. Between the fourth and seventh day among breast fed
babies, Bifidobacteria normally outdo the rest of the microorganisims.
Researchers now realize that one of the chief reasons breast-fed babies get
makedly fewer infections than formula-fed babies is that mother's milk
tends to promote superior growth of Bifidobacteria in the gastrointestional
tract, whereas non- breast milk, infant formulas have little such beneficial
effect. These highly beneficial bifidobacteria are the predominant organisms
in the stools of breast-fes infants, and account for about 99% of the
micro-flora in the large intestines and a lesser amount in the lower part of
the smaller intestine.
